Stinging Insects

Wasps
Control

Paper wasps build nests on your eaves, in your bushes, and in your irrigation boxes — then sting repeatedly when they feel threatened. In Arizona's heat, wasp activity peaks in late summer when they're most aggressive. Don't risk it.

High Risk — Aggressive Stingers

Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times. Paper wasps and yellow jackets are highly territorial near their nests — threatening or disturbing a colony can trigger a mass attack. Allergic reactions to wasp stings can be life-threatening.

Arizona Wasps: What You're Dealing With

Arizona hosts several wasp species of concern. Paper wasps (Polistes) are the most common — they build open, umbrella-shaped nests from chewed wood pulp and attach them to eaves, window frames, fences, and trees. They're semi-aggressive and will sting if the nest is disturbed. Arizona has multiple paper wasp species including the Arizona paper wasp, which is among the most aggressive.

Yellow jackets build much larger colonies — sometimes 5,000 workers — in underground burrows, wall voids, and dense vegetation. They're extremely aggressive when the nest is approached and can deliver multiple stings rapidly. Their colonies peak in late summer when food sources become scarce and they become increasingly defensive.

Mud dauber wasps are solitary and non-aggressive, building the distinctive tubular mud nests on walls and under eaves. While they rarely sting, their nests can damage stucco and paint over time. Unlike paper wasps and yellow jackets, mud daubers don't defend their nests — but their presence indicates a spider population they're feeding on.

Signs of Wasps Activity in Your Home

  • Open, layered paper nests under eaves, in trees, or on fence rails (paper wasps)
  • Wasp traffic entering and exiting a specific point in the ground, wall, or dense vegetation (yellow jackets)
  • Tubular mud structures on walls, window frames, or under overhangs (mud daubers)
  • Increased wasp activity in late summer near outdoor food and drink
  • Audible buzzing from inside wall voids (established yellow jacket nests)

How Zona Handles Wasps

1

Safe Nest Assessment

We assess the nest type, species, size, and location before treatment — from a safe distance. This determines the safest approach and timing for treatment.

2

Targeted Nest Treatment

We treat active nests with fast-acting dust or liquid products directly into the nest opening, working at night or early morning when wasps are least active and most workers are inside. Treatment immediately begins eliminating the colony.

3

Nest Removal

After the colony is eliminated, we physically remove the nest. Removing the nest prevents other wasps from reusing the structure and eliminates the pheromone cues that attract new queens to the same location.

4

Perimeter Prevention

We apply a residual product along eaves, under overhangs, and around entry points to deter future nesting. For properties with recurring wasp pressure, we recommend scheduling preventive treatments before spring nesting season.

Eco-Responsible, Family-Safe Products

We treat wasp nests directly rather than using broad landscape insecticide applications. This targeted approach eliminates the specific colony while leaving pollinators and beneficial insects in your yard undisturbed. Timing treatments at night further reduces any risk to non-target insects.

Why Zona vs. the Big Chains

Wasp treatment done wrong can trigger a dangerous defensive response. Our technicians are equipped with protective gear and professional products, and they know the right timing, approach angle, and treatment method for each wasp species. We don't recommend DIY treatment for paper wasps or yellow jackets — and neither should you.

Wasps Control FAQ

Can I remove a wasp nest myself?
We strongly advise against it for paper wasps and yellow jackets. Disturbing a nest without proper protection and treatment can trigger a mass attack involving hundreds of wasps. Mud dauber nests are low-risk, but paper wasp and yellow jacket removal should be handled professionally.
Will wasps return after the nest is removed?
If only the physical nest is removed without treatment, remaining workers will rebuild. We eliminate the colony first, then remove the nest. We also apply a preventive residual to the location to deter future queens from building in the same spot.
Are your treatments safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We time treatments for early morning or night, and recommend keeping people and pets away from the treatment area for 1–2 hours. Once dry, the area is safe. Nest removal is completed before any children or pets access the area.
When is wasp season in Arizona?
Paper wasps become active in early spring (March) when queens emerge from overwintering. Colonies grow through summer and peak in aggression from August through October as food becomes scarce and populations reach their maximum size.
