Arizona Bark Scorpions: What You Need to Know

The Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) is a small, tan-colored scorpion that reaches about 2–3 inches in length. Unlike most scorpions, bark scorpions are skilled climbers — they can scale stucco walls, hide in palm trees, squeeze through gaps as small as a credit card, and even hang upside down from ceilings.

They are nocturnal and thrive in the warm, dry conditions of the Sonoran Desert. During the day, they shelter in dark, tight spaces: inside shoes, under rocks, in woodpiles, behind furniture, and in wall voids. At night, they come out to hunt — and that's when accidental stings happen.

A bark scorpion sting causes intense pain, tingling, and numbness that can last 24–72 hours. Children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems may experience more severe reactions including muscle spasms and difficulty breathing. Antivenom (Anascorp) is available at Arizona emergency rooms.

Signs of Scorpion Activity in Your Home

  • Seeing scorpions at night — they glow bright blue-green under ultraviolet (UV/blacklight) flashlights
  • Finding scorpions in shoes, clothing, towels, or bedding in the morning
  • Scorpions in bathrooms, garages, and dark corners, especially near plumbing entry points
  • Living near desert preserves, wash areas, rock walls, or citrus trees (prime harborage)
  • Neighbors reporting scorpion activity — they travel in clusters and share territory
  • New construction nearby, which displaces scorpion colonies into adjacent homes

How Zona Handles Scorpions

1

Inspection & UV Assessment

We use professional UV blacklight flashlights to inspect your home's perimeter, entry points, and interior for active scorpion presence. This helps us map their movement patterns and identify high-risk zones before we treat.

2

Perimeter Barrier Treatment

We apply a comprehensive barrier treatment around your home's foundation, eaves, window frames, doors, plumbing penetrations, and any cracks or gaps. Our products are chosen for desert conditions where heat breaks down standard pesticides faster.

3

Harborage Elimination

We treat inside walls, under baseboards, in garages, and along weep screeds — the places scorpions actually hide. We also address roof lines, attic vents, and dense landscaping where they breed and shelter.

4

Quarterly Maintenance Plan

In Arizona's heat, most barrier products break down within 90 days. We recommend quarterly service to maintain continuous protection. Between-visit scorpion sightings? We return at no extra charge — that's our service guarantee.

Eco-Responsible, Family-Safe Products

Every product Zona uses is carefully selected for low environmental impact. Our treatments are applied precisely — targeting scorpion harborage areas while protecting the desert ecosystem we all share. Safe for children, pets, and beneficial desert wildlife once dry.

Why Zona vs. the Big Chains

As Arizona natives, we understand bark scorpion behavior in ways that out-of-state chains simply don't. We know the seasonal patterns, the specific entry points in desert-built homes, and where scorpions hide in your specific neighborhood. Your technician knows your property — not just a service ticket.

Scorpion Control FAQ

How do scorpions get into my house?
Bark scorpions can squeeze through gaps as thin as a credit card. Common entry points include gaps around plumbing, weep screeds, unsealed electrical outlets, under doors without proper sweeps, and through attached garages. Our inspection identifies and recommends sealing these points.
Are your scorpion treatments safe for kids and pets?
Yes. All products we use are EPA-registered and selected for low environmental impact. We ask that children and pets avoid treated areas until dry (typically 1–2 hours). Once dry, they're safe to resume normal use of the space.
How long does scorpion treatment last?
In Arizona's intense heat, most professional barrier products break down within 60–90 days. This is why quarterly service is the standard in the Valley — it maintains a continuous, effective barrier rather than letting coverage lapse.
I found a scorpion indoors. What should I do right now?
Don't handle it. Use a glass jar to trap it and call us. If someone was stung, especially a child or elderly person, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest ER. Antivenom (Anascorp) is widely available in Arizona emergency rooms.
Do I need the Scorpion Shield add-on or is the base plan enough?
The ZONA360 base plan provides general pest control with some scorpion coverage. If you live near desert preserves, washes, rocky terrain, or in neighborhoods with active scorpion populations, we strongly recommend the Scorpion Shield add-on. It adds targeted bi-monthly scorpion treatments and a UV inspection protocol specifically designed to address bark scorpions.
